X-mas in the Galapagos and Ecuador is pretty sweet!
December has always been my favorite month of the year. On the first week of December, Quito celebrates its festivities, then we celebrate X-mas with our families and loved ones, and finally, the end of the year is truly something special here in Ecuador. Oh yeah… my birthday is on December 27th, but that’s neither here nor there. jejeje.
December – high season in the Galapagos.
December has always been considered high season in the Galapagos.
- The weather outside ain’t frightful…
- Weather in the Galapagos during December is amazing, you will experience land temperatures ranging from 70-80 ° F
- Average water temperatures of 75° F. These conditions are perfect for trekking the islands, lounging on the sun deck of your yacht or snorkeling without the need of long wetsuits.
- You get a chance to spot tons of wildlife…
- Experience the hatching of giant tortoise eggs
- Green sea turtles begin mating
- The Galapagos Islands turn “green” (not like the Hulk though)
- Waved albatross are active and Masked boobies begin nesting
- December is a great time to travel to the Galapagos Islands
- If you are coming from the northern states in the USA or northern Europe, coming to the Galapagos during winter is awesome. You get to experience perfect sunny days both in Galapagos and mainland Ecuador and can forget about your hair freezing in the morning and below zero temperatures. Galapagos and Ecuador welcome snowbirds every year.
- X-mas and end of year vacation time during December always make it a sought after month for travelers.
What does high season mean in the Galapagos Islands?
- High season means surcharges on yachts
- Most yachts have you incur a high season surcharge ranging from 20-30% on top of the rack rate.
- High season means only week-long itineraries are available
- During X-mas and New Year, most yachts will only allow for 8-day itineraries and will not split the itinerary into 4 and 5 day short trips.
- And finally, high season means limited availability on yachts
- Travelers prefer December, they have time off of work during this month or fancy spending Xmas or New Year aboard a yacht. This means that there is limited availability for December and if you are keen on booking a December cruise you should plan way ahead of time (like a year prior).
So… is it impossible to find a Galapagos cruise during X-mas?
Not at all!
There are plenty of cruise options still left for December, X-mas and New Year’s Eve 2019.
